Our First Financial Freedom Party!

On Friday, July 12th, we hosted our first Financial Freedom Party at the Fresh Pond Apartments! With the help of our 5 community facilitatores, we gathered a group of 20 people, facilitated and hosted by our Executive Director Tina Alu. This first Financial Freedom Party was an opportunity for facilitators and staff to see a real party in action, and to introduce community members to the Financial Freedom Parties to recruit future potential hosts. There was so much energy in the room – even though not all of the participants knew each other, they quickly became comfortable and enthusiastically participated in all of the activities.

We did an activity called The Bean Game, where participants role played as if they were a family unit allocating their income (“beans”) towards different household expenses to give an example of budgeting and how families make financial decisions. We also did a true/false activity about credit that sparked a lot of interesting discussion. Intermixed between the games were nuggets of financial information that whet participants’ appetites for more learning in the form of one on one financial coaching or group workshops with CEOC financial coaches.

The Financial Freedom Parties are a peer-led, game-based financial education intervention that blends social and educational elements. Party hosts will receive a stipend to cover the cost of providing culturally appropriate refreshments. Sessions are engaging and incorporate games and prizes to facilitate learning through interactive activities. Each party will be hosted by a member of the community, who will invite friends and family to attend. If you’re interested in learning more or hosting your own party for your friends/family, reach out to us at info@ceoccambridge.org!
