Cambridge, MA (June 1, 2020) – Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee (CEOC) announced today that it is the recipient of a $100,000 Cummings Foundation Grant. CEOC is one of 130 local nonprofit organizations to receive grants through the Cummings Foundation’s $20 million grant program. The Cambridge organization was chosen from a total of 738 applicants during a competitive review process. CEOC is a first time recipient.
CEOC was established in 1965 as part of the federal “War on Poverty” and is Cambridge’s designated anti-poverty community action agency. CEOC will receive $100,000 from the Cummings Foundation over a period of four years to aid in their mission to challenge poverty’s causes and impacts to assist low-income individuals and families to achieve economic stability & security.
“This grant means so much to us! Poverty and income inequality are always huge issues to challenge. But during this pandemic where unemployment is surging and food insecurity is growing, Cambridge’s low-income communities have been hit the hardest,” said Tina Alu, CEOC’s Executive Director. “Cummings’ funding will help us to increase our support to these residents by providing critical advocacy along with some direct monetary assistance.”
The Cummings $20 Million Grant Program supports Massachusetts nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex, and Suffolk counties. Through this place-based initiative, Cummings Foundation aims to give back in the area where it owns commercial buildings, all of which are managed, at no cost to the Foundation, by its affiliate, Cummings Properties. Founded in 1970 by Bill Cummings, the Woburn-based commercial real estate firm leases and manages 10 million square feet of debt-free space, the majority of which exclusively benefits the Foundation.

CEOC provides an array of services, including food pantry; individual tenant advocacy for housing stabilization and homelessness prevention; financial education and coaching tobuild economic stability; free tax preparation to maximize EITC and child tax credits avoiding for-profit tax filing fees; comprehensive public benefits enrollment, advocacy, and follow up to ensure that individuals are receiving all the cash supports for which they are eligible, especially SNAP, TAFDC, SSI, and SSDI; and health insurance outreach, enrollment, education and on-going advocacy. CEOC staff speaks in addition to English, Haitian Creole, Amharic, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
